What Does the Bible Teach About the Soul?

The Bible teaches that the soul is the sum of who we are. It is not a separate entity from us, nor is it something that simply occupies the body. This can be clearly seen in the account of the creation of man. Pay attention here to the elements that come together to make a soul:

And God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul (Genesis 2:7).

Note that a soul consists of body plus breath of God. The words "spirit" and breath are used interchangeably throughout the Bible. Job for example says "All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils"  (Job 27:3). Remove the breath (spirit) and the soul perishes (ezekiel 18:7, 20).

Notice also that man was not given a soul, but he became a soul (Genesis 2:7). A soul is not something within us but who we are.
