This question reflects a common mis-understanding about what the spirit is. Persons asking this question usually equates the spirit with the soul. It also assumes that the soul is a distinct entity from the body.

A more Biblical understanding is that the spirit is the breath of life - the non-conscious life force from God. Notice Job 27:3-5:

All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils; My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit.God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me.

Notice that Job equates the spirit not with the soul, but with the breath that's within him. Notice also that the "spirit of God" is in his nostrils.

Death is then the removal of the spirit, or breath of life from the body. At that time the soul cease to exist.
