Becoming Like Christ - Growing in His Knowldge
As we get ready to launch our Daily Devotional blog I want to prepare the way by sharing what you can expect from a deeper study of God''s word.
There are more benefits to knowing Christ than you may think. This study of 2 Peter 1:2-4 highlights a few of them.
2 Peter 1:2-4 (especially verse 4) is one of my favorite Bible passages. I was always intrigued by the phrase "become partakers of His [Christ''s] divine nature". Though I''ve studied it time and again, mentioned it to others on occasions, it wasn't until recently during our Friday evening youth Bible study that I finally got a true sense of what this verse means.
Prayerfully studying the Word of God has numerous benefits, chief of which is the privilege of partaking of Christ''s divine nature. Let''s read 2 Peter 1:2-4 and extract and claim the benefits promised there.Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
Notice that all these benefits come as a result of growing in the knowledge of God, and of Christ, and believing His promises.
There are a couple ways to acquire knowledge of God. For example, Psalms 19:2 tells us that "Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge". Nature speaks eloquently of God. But the most complete knowledge of God comes through the Bible, and especially through the revelation of His Son.
For the remainder of this week we will look at some of the specific benefits mentioned in 2 Peter 1:2-4:
Grace be multiplied
Peace be multiplied
Life and godliness
Exceeding great and precious promises
Partakers of the divine nature
For today I invite you to consider Proverbs 2, which highlights the blessings awaiting those who seek knowledge, and the disasters that often overtake those who neglect this privilage:2 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; 2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; 3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; 4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; 5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. 7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. 8 He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. 9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path. 10 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; 11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: 12 To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things; 13 Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; 14 Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked; 15 Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths: 16 To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words; 17 Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God. 18 For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead. 19 None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life. 20 That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous. 21 For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it. 22 But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.
The knowledge of Christ transforms us and affects how we live. You cannot be the same after spending prayerful moments in the word. Time in the word changes things; It changes us. Experience it for yourself.
